State of the Film: Doin' Good...All Considered
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
There's been a number of inquiries lately as to the status of this film. So I am sitting down this morning to give a 'state of the film' entry.
As a preamble, let me remind you, and perhaps myself, that this blog is the first of its kind (that I know of)...where a filmmaker sets out to keep a running narrative of the process of making a large indie film...and in this case the first polo film in history. I pledged from the beginning to give it to you straight, warts and all. And so far I think it's been pretty successful. It has brought together literally thousands of readers, has greatly advanced the development and early pre-production of the film, has seen us through various investors and the making and editing of the promo, and has even led to a column and blog in MovieMaker Magazine.
So, on with the point of this entry: the status:
BlueRun Financing. These are the funds we're seeking for the further pre-production of Of Kings & Cowboys, but also the development of the next BlueRun film, Russian Warmblood. (It is through this type of funding that we have raised the money necessary to make the promo, and to conduct all the overhead -travel, phones, etc.- to present.) We have tremendous interest in these films, and even our third one, Fast Women Beautiful Horses, and now our upcoming TV programming. And of course, one of the great things about this is the HUGE return on investment built into the deal...far better than anyone can get in the markets today. (Remember in my 'other life' I am a Mergers & Acquisitions attorney, and CPA, who has built many successful companies over the years. In other words, this isn't my first rodeo.)
Of Kings & Cowboys Financing. I am anticipating the budget of the film to be around $25M, but that could change depending on the top billed actors that come aboard. We are very happy to already have $5M raised from an Argentinean firm toward this budget.
Casting. We've had great success in getting the script read and well reviewed by the reps of some major talent. In fact ICM gave it great coverage and some of the agents there have begun to help directly. So let's just say that negotiations are ongoing, and I'm excited to see where it is leading.
Publicity. We've had some great publicity, with stories in Variety, and more to come. One thing I am looking to do is to retain the services of a great LA publicist to help as we move forward.
Ok, so there you have it. That's our status. I hope you see an area where you can help out. If so, email me at dmbluerun@gmail.com and I'll get you plugged in. Ride on.
